In 2022, the agricultural sector—including on-farm electricity use—accounted for 10.5 % of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Unlike the broader economy, farms emit significant nitrous oxide and methane—from fertilizer application, enteric fermentation in livestock, and manure management. Between 1990 and 2022, agriculture’s emissions rose by about 5.1 %, while total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions fell by 3 %.
