U.S. consumers spent 26.1 cents of every food dollar on wholesale and retail (11.4¢ wholesale, 14.7¢ retail) in 2023.
Food services took the biggest share at 31.5 cents, while food processing dropped to just 13.2 cents — its lowest level since 1993.
Distribution and service costs continue to play a bigger role in what we pay for food today.
