Agtools Wins Worldwide Decarbonization Challenge

Agtools a data-based platform serving the agriculture sector for their market data needs is one of five winners

May 5, 2022, Orange, CA – Today Agtools announced being chosen as one of the five winners in the Orange Silicon Valley Decarbonization Challenge. More than one hundred startups participated in the project that is committed to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions to reach its goal of Net Zero Carbon by 2040. The winners were chosen based on their technologies and readiness for commercial engagement and tool developed by Clean Energy Ventures *.

Following the event, president of the jury. Elizabeth Tchoungui, Orange’s Executive Director of CSR, Diversity, and Philanthropy, stated, “At Orange, we are convinced that digital technology is a powerful lever for decarbonization. With this challenge, we are pleased to contribute to new solutions that fight global warming via IT and digital innovations.”

Agtools CEO, Martha Montoya, started the company, after observing firsthand worldwide, how crops for multinationals would realize cumulative losses of 14% on their food waste between farms and distribution centers equating to roughly 1.5 gigatons of CO2. Montoya says, “Before Covid 19, we knew the negative impact on our natural resources and the industry would factor them as part of doing business on their financials without realizing the negative impact to the earth and humanity.”

Today, annual lose is 75 billion cubic meters of water in the production of fruits and vegetables and 715 million hectares of land due to losses in meat and animal products. This does not even include the greenhouse gases emitted from landfills from rotting wasted food or food waste at retail and consumer levels worldwide, accordingly to FAO – Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

The Agtools team understands that optimizing human decisions in the food supply chain to avoid unnecessary carbon emissions is not an easy task and it is addressing it through a Sustainability calculator located in their suite of data widgets.

In addition to the market data dashboard, included are 76 variables that should be considered when planting, harvesting, or shipping any agricultural commodity. Agtools architecture one stop solution was created originally for fruits and vegetables, the most complex and volatile industry worldwide. Gustavo Montoya, CTO co-founder states, “We have over 5 billion datasets moving at 1 billion transactions per second, making it the world’s largest commodities database, allowing the user to grab data on their commodity while calculating their carbon footprint when adjusting their sourcing or shipping decision-making.”

Subscribers to the Agtools dashboard are able to view four different weather sections that are specific to their commodity and will find a sustainability widget to enter their shipment volume into a formula that will reveal their carbon footprint.”

A February 2022 Forbes article states consumers and retailers are holding companies accountable for sustainable products. Sustainable is at an inflection point with analysts predicting that that by 2025, 40% of all manufacturing IT will own responsibility of data modelling for net zero carbon targets. With sustainability as a top issue in the agriculture community, Agtools recognizes this trend and has made it one of its bedrocks within the agriculture data system.

Agtools will participate in an all-expense-paid trip to Paris to attend business development meeting and present their solutions to Orange and their stakeholders and the opportunity to attend the Change NOW sustainability-focused conference where Orange is an Official Partner.
