The FAO’s estimate for the true costs to society of unhealthy diets, among other elements

Sometimes, however accurate, data leads to figures that are challenging to fathom and unpleasant to learn. Take, for instance, the FAO's analysis published in June 2023, which tags at USD 10 Trillion the effect of following in proper diets on the world's economy. At nearly 10% of global GDP, the significant figure is mainly linked to unhealthy diets, leading to health issues and productivity losses.

Environmental impacts account for a fifth of these costs, with low-income countries bearing the heaviest economic burden relative to GDP.

The FAO's report advocates for true cost accounting by governments and private sectors to expose and address these costs. It highlights the need for policy levers like taxes and regulations to improve agrifood systems. For more information.
