According to the American Geophysical Union’s journal, Earth’s Future, “agricultural water scarcity is expected to increase in more than 80% of the world’s croplands by 2050.” The study found that how much water is available for crops depends significantly on how much rainwater is lost due to runoff and evaporation. The study indicates that farming techniques that focus on keeping rainwater captured in agricultural soils can help mitigate water shortages in the world’s arid regions.
