Phenology, derived from the Greek word phaino which means to show, is the study of the recurring stages of the life cycle of plants and animals related to time and climate; a clear example is budding and flowering in spring, changes in leaf color in autumn, migration and nesting of birds, insect hatching and hibernation (Dubé et al. 1984).
